NCC is multiplying its actions against counterfeit equipment in Nigeria

The regulator is not willing to remain silent about unapproved equipment flooding the Nigerian
telecommunications market. In their declaration made last September in LAGOS, NCC made it clear that
they are willing to have a sector with approved equipment in Nigeria.
For that reason, they are multiplying sensitization meetings. Indeed, they have just held a meeting where they explained the harmful impacts of counterfeit equipment on users and their consequences on the quality of services. This meeting was held on December 11th with the theme ‘’
HAZARDOUS EFFECTS OF NON TYPE APPROVED
HANDSETS, IMPACT ON QUALITY OF SERVICE (QoS)
AND E-WASTE’’

The goal is to have approved equipment that complies with the country›s standards. MR Abubakar
Usman, Zoning Operations Manager, reported that a number of counterfeit devices circulating in
Nigeria represent a threat to the telecommunications sector. The consequences are among others:
• Health concerns associated with EMF emission
• Negative impact on quality of service
• Negative environmental Impact (E- Waste)
Given the strong market surveillance, actors in the telecommunications sector are therefore invited to have approved equipment in compliance with the regulation.
